Tom Cartwright
Creating an unstable environment for the audience to look at was my main goal for these pieces. Having 3 large canvases mounted on the wall with plaster dripping down from them creates constant thought-provoking images in your mind – strongly revolving around the idea of instability. The sheer height and size of the canvases on the wall compared to the audience makes a vast comparison when you are in front of the work. You may feel intimidated, uneasy, or uncertain due to the unknown environment you find yourself in. The ridge-like surface at the top creates an extreme contrast to the larger smooth and plain surface area of the canvas, and it is this juxtaposition of materials and heights within the work ensures an instable thought pattern is created by the audience throughout their experience.
